Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born on August 9, 1963 in Newark, New Jersey to parents John Houston and gospel singer Cissy Houston. Eleven-year-old Houston took her singing baby steps as a soloist with the junior gospel choir at the New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. During her teenage years, Houston toured nightclubs performing alongside her mother, Cissy. In 1977, Houston sang backup vocals on the single “Life's a Party” with the Michael Zager Band. A year later again as a background vocalist she sang “I’m Every Woman” with Chaka Khan. She also sang back-up on Lou Rawls and Jermaine Jackson’s albums. Besides singing, Houston also launched a modelling career and was one of the first women of colour to be featured on the cover of “Seventeen” magazine. There were also layouts of Houston in Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Young Miss. Houston then appeared on a TV commercial. Despite her modelling success, Houston contributed the ballad called “One Down” to the album “Memories” by the group “Material”. At the age of twenty, the promising artist signed to Arista Records where she recorded a duet with Teddy Pendergrass “Hold Me” for his album “Love Language”.
In 1985 “Whitney Houston” was released which by 1986 had reached the top of the Billboard 200 where it stayed for 14 weeks all together. The albums single “Someone For Me”, failed to chart but the second single “Thinking About You” reached the top ten of the R&B Chart. “You Give Good Love” reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 and the top of the R&B Chart. “Saving All My Love for You” was her first top charter in the US and UK and finally “How Will I Know” became another number one hit. At first, Houston promoted her album by singing in nightclubs, then as an opening act for Jeffrey Osborne on his nationwide tour and finally by setting off on her world tour, “The Greatest Love Tour”.
The album’s success brought in the awards and Houston won her first Grammy at the 1986 Award Ceremony for “Saving All My Love for You” where she also performed which led to the Emmy Award for Outstanding Individual Performance in a Variety or Music Program. She was won seven American Music Awards in 1986 and 1987, and an MTV Video Music Award. “Whitney Houston” is listed as one of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and on The Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame's Definitive 200.
Her second album “Whitney” was released in 1987, was a commercial success, and has since the sold 20 million copies worldwide. The album produced four number one singles, “Didn't We Almost Have It All”, “So Emotional” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” giving her seven consecutive top charters a feat that broke the previous record belonging to The Beatles and The Bee Gees who both had six. The single “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” earned her another Grammy Award. She also won two more American Music Awards.
To promote the album Houston completed a world tour the “Moment of Truth World Tour”. Whitney Houston was a major supporter of the anti-apartheid movement leading her to participate at Wembley Stadium in London to celebrate Nelson Mandela's 70th birthday, raising awareness to South-African apartheid. She also performed at another benefit concert at Madison Square Garden in NYC to raise funds for the United Negro College Fund. Houston formed the “Whitney Houston Foundation for Children”. In 1988, the artist recorded the song “One Moment in Time” for NBC’s coverage of the 1988 Summer Olympics.
The 1990s brought a change in direction with Houston adopting a more urban sound with rhythmic grooves, soulful ballads and dance tracks on the album “I’m Your Baby Tonight” which reached number three on the Billboard 200. Continuing her humanitarian work Houston donated her share of the income from the release of “The Star Spangled Banner” to Red Cross and was appointed to the Red Cross Board of Governors. She also organized a concert for the armed men who fought in the Gulf War and their families under the title “Welcome Home Heroes”.
In 1992 Houston carried her talent onto the silver screen acting as Rachel Marron alongside Kevin Costner in the film “The Bodyguard” the film grossed $410 million worldwide despite receiving negative reviews. The soundtrack of the film featured six of Houston’s songs. Released as a lead single the song “I will Always Love You” was on top of the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks, the R&B chart for 11 weeks and the Adult Contemporary charts for five weeks making it the first single to be atop all three charts at the same time. The other two singles, “I’m Every Woman” and “I Have Nothing” also peaked at the top five. Houston became the first artist to have three singles in the Top twenty at the same time. The soundtrack is the only album by a female artist on the list of the world’s Top 10 best selling albums.
